I attended C4 in October. I sold Acts of Violence, a new issue of IF-X that features a short horror comic of mine, and looked for new readers and artists for The Grim Collection.

I ran a graphic novel writing workshop for teens. I talked briefly about how an idea is developed into a story and how a writer and artist work together to create a graphic novel and then we got down to writing. I presented an idea and the teens worked together to create characters, a setting, and a plot. You can see the results here.

I appeared at three schools in rural Saskatchewan on Friday, October 21, 2011. The three towns are in close proximity to one another. Students are grades 6 – 12. The topic was how a writer and artist work together to create a comic. I talked about developing an idea, writing the script, and how the artist uses the script to create the finished comic. These three visits were arranged through the Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild.

I led a discussion about Comics in the UK– tracing the history and evolution of the medium, starting in the 19th century with paper stories and ending with 2000 A.D. One of the attendees grew up in the UK and was an avid comic reader so he provided some very interesting anecdotal flavor to the evening.

I am invited to attend an “Authors’ Visit”, which is being organized by the school. Local writers will be on hand to talk about their craft. Author’s can do readings, have published works on hand for sale, and answer questions from students and their parents. I will have a small presentation prepared on the topic of writing graphic novels, and will have material on display that shows how graphic novels are made– from the script to the pencils, inks, colors and lettering. I will also have some of my published work available for sale.

I lead parents and children on an exploration of kid-friendly comic books. Superheroes, Bone, brave warrior mice and everything in-between! North American creations, Japanese manga, and European imports! A great journey for the seasoned comics reader or someone looking to learn what comics can offer. For children ages 5 – 12 with a parent.

I led a discussion of crime comics– from their heyday, to their near demise, to their return, and finally their current status in the comics industry. I used examples from past and present to aid in the discussion. This was originally scheduled for the Regina Public Library but it was cancelled due to a low number of sign-ups. I contacted the people who had signed up and managed to round together a few more people and we got together at a local pub for the presentation and discussion.
