The End League and other misc reviews

Posted by caperaway on March 27, 2008

It’s been a while since I posted anything. I’ve spent more time thinking about what to write than actually writing, and that applies to all sorts of writing and not just this here blog. So, in the end, I decide to post some reviews I recently did for ComicReaders.com. How safe.

The End League #1 – #2
A handful of remaining supermen and women embark on a desperate and perilous journey through a world dominated by powerful villains in hopes of locating the one artifact that can save humanity. This is a new ongoing series by Rick Remender. He’s the guy writing some of the most entertaining comics in recent years. (read more)

The Goon #22 and The Walking Dead #47
I have mini reviews of these two comics in a recent edition of Weekly Wanderlust. (read more)

Boychild Books
I review a couple recent releases from this small press publisher: Iraq: Operation Corporate Takeover and The Japanese Drawing Room. (read more)

Project Superpowers #1, Sharkman #2, The Secret History #5 (of 7)
I talk about these three releases in tidy little reviews in an older edition of Weekly Wanderlust. (read more)

New Reviews for February

Posted by caperaway on February 23, 2008

I’ve written some comic reviews this month but have been lax at posting them to this here blog. It is time to rectify that.

Graphic Classics volume 7: Bram Stoker
The Bram Stoker second edition begins with forty-eight new pages of material: An adaptation of the horror classic Dracula. Joe Ollmann provides the art. (read more)

Graphic Classics volume 8: Mark Twain
I’ll admit I never appreciated Mark Twain as a contributor to the literary world until I came to understand just how much of a contributor he was to the world in general. (read more)

Astro City: Beautie, The Goon #21, The Walking Dead #46
I reviewed these three comics in the February 13 edition of Weekly Wanderlust. (read more)

Crazy Mary: Trinity, Uzumaki volume 1 and more

Posted by caperaway on December 17, 2007

It’s been a while since I provided a list of reviews I’ve written for ComicReaders.com but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been writing them. Here then is a list of my most recent reviews:

Crazy Mary: Trinity: Written by Michael Colbert, a fellow writer on the Special Edition project.
The Northlanders #1: A new Vertigo series from Brian Wood, featuring Vikings.
Uzumaki volume 1: Fantastically strange and gross horror manga from Junji Ito.
Elephantmen: Wounded Animals: Sci-fi comics at their very best.
The Walking Dead #44: The beginning of the “Nobody’s Safe” story arc.
Mouse Guard: Winter 1152 #2 (of 6): The sequel to last year’s break out hit.
Groo: Hell on Earth #1 (of 4): Groo, the bumbling barbarian, returns.

The Sword #1, Gene Simmons does comics, and more

Posted by caperaway on November 5, 2007

I’m back into the swing of things over at ComicReaders.com. I’ve been making an effort to not review only the comics I read on a regular basis. I’ve been branching out, trying new stuff much like I did in the early days of ComicReaders.com. Here are the most recent books I’ve reviewed:

 The Sword #1
Dara, her father, her mother, her sister and her friend become characters with substance after the passing of a few pages. This is crucial since The Luna Brothers rip the story apart later when uninvited guests come to call. (read more)

Gene Simmons: Dominatrix #3, The Walking Dead #43 and The Killer #5 – #6 were each covered in a recent edition of Weekly Wanderlust. (read more)

Summer Reading Specials

Posted by caperaway on September 1, 2007

I took a summer vacation from writing comic reviews, but I certainly didn’t take a vacation from reading comics, which is why I decided to publish a series of Summer Reading Specials now that holidays are over. Check ‘em out:

The Walking Dead Edition
All in all, the summer months haven’t been particularly kind to The Walking Dead. I’ve taken issue with storytelling elements in each. The underlying issue is that Kirkman has jammed too much into these issues. (read more)

Mainstream Edition
In the mainstream realm, I stayed clear of DC and Marvel’s core books and kept my focus on books that dare to be different: The Exterminators #20, Faker #1 (of 6), Faker #2 (of 6), The Goon #19, Jack of Fables #13, Okko: Cycle of Water #4 (of 4). (read more)

Small Press Edition
I’m proud to say I found the time to check out some small press books: Grant Morrison: The Early Years, Graphic Classics volume 14: Gothic Classics, Lenore #13, Mouse Guard: Winter 1152 #1 (of 6), Snapfood.  (read more)
